The agenda:

  • Report back from meeting with Adam Hug, Leader of Westminster Council

  • Edgware Road/Sussex Gardens junction improvements by TfL aren’t good enough – our response

  • Next steps for Cycle Buddies in South Westminster

  • How can we deal with all the City of Westminster consultations?

Edgware Road: Tell TfL to do better

TfL are consulting on improvements at the Edgware Road/Sussex Gardens junction, and we think it’s a huge missed opportunity to make this hostile junction much safer for cycling. Please take two minutes to complete the consultation – you could make some of the following points in your own words:

  • Why not put protected cycle lanes on Edgware Road?

  • Why not continue Sussex Gardens cycle lanes up to the junction?

  • There’s a risk of vehicles turning left across cycles as they approach from Old Marylebone Road

  • A much safer, up-to-date design would be a circulating cycle stage junction here, where pedestrians and cycles have their own separate phase across all arms at once.

Closes 18 December

Cycle Buddies in Westminster

LCC have a project in South Westminster in partnership with Grosvenor estate to promote cycling in South Westminster. We’ve also just been awarded a grant to expand the project to the North of Westminster as well. This will be in partnership with Westminster Wheels and start in the new year.

South Westminster: Belgravia and Pimlico Family Cycle Saturdays is on the 3rd Saturday of every month at Eccleston Yards and has three free activities for anyone to join: an easy family bike ride, a Dr Bike and level 2 & 3 cycle skills sessions for Cycle Buddies who would like to help novice cyclists and marshal family rides.

The next one is Saturday, 16 December!

Dangerous Junctions

The LCC Dangerous Junctions map launch last month was a great success, with lots of pick up from the press. Check out the map and filter for Westminster to see our worst junctions for walking and cycling. For cycling, 4 of the worst 5 are junctions connecting to one of the Royal Parks, such as Hyde Park Corner.

Cargo Bikes

Westminster has joined Cargo Revolution's Borough Charter which means they have made a commitment to become a cargo bike friendly borough, where everyone who wants to use a cargo bike is supported. You can now hire a cargo bike in Westminster and there is also a micro-logistics hub in Pimlico that will support local businesses with moving some or all their deliveries onto cargo bikes. If you have any more questions about cargo bikes in Westminster, have a look at the recently updated cargo bikes page of their website.
