Temporary lanes

RegentSt.jpg

Regent Street

  • Mandatory cycle lane (solid white line) with no protection, interrupted by bus stops.

OUR ASK: Add protection, provide bus stop bypasses, and ensure that junctions with Regent Street are safe for cycling.

Northumberland Avenue

  • Mandatory cycle lane (solid white line) without protection, interrupted by bus stops.

OUR ASK: Protect the cycle tracks with wands or barriers and create bus stop bypasses for cycles to continue safely past bus stops.

WCC_201.jpg

Abingdon Street

  • Closed to motor traffic (except buses and cycles) during peak am and pm times

OUR ASK: Please keep it! And extend the hours. We’d like more roads closed to motor traffic in Westminster on a timed or full-time basis to make safe space for active travel.

Bayswater Road

  • Mandatory cycle lanes (solid white line) with no protection, Mon-Sat 7am - 7pm.

OUR ASK: Add protection to the cycle lane and make it 24/7, with double yellow lines on its whole length. Parking for the art market on Sunday could be relocated to the Lancaster Gate war memorial.

BuckinghamPalaceRd.jpg

Buckingham Palace Road

  • Widened bus and cycle lane on the stretch between Ebury Bridge and Eccleston Bridge

OUR ASK: Bus lanes are a good temporary solution but not everyone feels safe to cycle in them. Better options include: 1) separate bus and cycle lanes on this wide road; 2) segregated cycle lanes, without bus lanes (with cycle ‘bypasses’ at bus stops); or 3) a ‘bus gate’ to prioritise buses and bikes over general traffic.

Harrow Road

  • Cycle lanes with no protection, sometimes mandatory (solid white line) and sometimes advisory (broken white line). They are part time only and the lanes disappear altogether for bus stops and where the road narrows.

OUR ASK: Provide continuous, protected cycle tracks. Bus stops should have ‘bypasses’ for cycling. Loading and parking can be either relocated to side streets or ‘floated’ outside the cycle lane to protect it from moving vehicles.

London Street

  • London Street has an advisory cycle lane (dotted white line) in the door zone of parked cars

OUR ASK: Remove the parking on the east side of the street, as was previously done for temporary wider pavements and provide a wand-protected cycle track. In the long term this could be a bi-directional protected route.

Brook Street

  • Brook Street has a mandatory cycle lane that stops short of the traffic lights

OUR ASK: Protect this cycle lane with wands or barriers all the way to the traffic lights.

Stanhope Terrace

  • Stanhope Terrace has a mandatory cycle lane (solid white line) between Hyde Park Mews and Sussex Place

OUR ASK: Implement the Hyde Park Estate low traffic neighbourhood, which includes Stanhope Terrace. On low traffic streets, cycle lanes are not needed.

Spring Street

  • Spring Street has an advisory cycle lane

OUR ASK: Protect the cycle route with wands or by ‘floating’ the parking. Allow cycles to turn right from the junction with Praed Street at the north end to open up a more direct route.

Sussex Place

  • Sussex Place has a mandatory cycle lane for part of the southbound street, including in the door zone of parked cars

OUR ASK: Implement the Hyde Park Estate low traffic neighbourhood, which includes Sussex Place. On low traffic streets, cycle lanes are not needed.

Queensway /

Inverness Terrace

  • Queensway and the northern section of Inverness Terrace have no cycle lanes, just cycle logos painted on the road.

  • The southern section of Inverness Terrace has a combination of advisory (dotted lines) and mandatory (solid line) cycle lanes, including in the door zone of parked cars

OUR ASK: Remove parking to make space for protected cycle lanes, or remove through motor traffic, to make this a safe cycle route. Closing Queensway to through traffic except buses (on a timed basis) would create a safe, attractive and direct route for walking and cycling as well as benefit local businesses.

Westbourne Bridge

  • Mandatory cycle lane on Westbourne Bridge

OUR ASK: Protect the cycle tracks with wands or barriers

Westbourne Terrace Junction with Bishop’s Bridge Road

  • On Westbourne Terrace approaching the junction with Bishops Bridge Road, where there were three traffic lanes, one of the two ‘straight ahead lanes’ is now for cycles. It is confusing for drivers and both dangerous and intimidating for cyclists.

OUR ASK: Approaching the junction, keep the cycle lane to the left not the centre, and remove or ‘float’ parking as necessary. The junction will also need to be modified to make it safe for cycles as well as pedestrians.

Westbourne Terrace

  • Mandatory cycle lane on Westbourne Terrace (between Cleveland Terrace and Craven Road).

OUR ASK: Add wands for protection and to prevent motor vehicles parking in the cycle lane

WCC_129.jpg

Lupus Street

  • Advisory cycle lane (broken white line) without protection.

OUR ASK: Protect the cycle tracks with wands or barriers and/or ‘float’ parked cars to the outside of the cycle tracks.

Westbourne Bridge to

Lord Hills Bridge

  • Small piece of land on south side of Harrow Road providing one-way cycle connection.

OUR ASK: We note that this is a big improvement. It needs to be made two-way for cycling and lighting added to make this route feel safer at night.

Portland Place - DOWNGRADED

  • Mandatory cycle lane next to parked cars - now downgraded to advisory.

OUR ASK: Create protected cycle tracks by ‘floating’ the parking outside the cycle route.

Victoria Street - REMOVED

  • Mandatory cycle lane with no protection.

OUR ASK: Reinstate this cycle lane with protection.

Aldwych - REMOVED

  • Painted cycle lane with no protection - now removed

OUR ASK: Reinstate the lanes with protection. This cycle route will be particularly important when the Strand is partially pedestrianised and Aldwych is two-way for motor traffic.

Kingsway - REMOVED

  • Mandatory cycle lane (solid white line) with no protection. Now removed.

OUR ASK: Reinstate the cycle lane with protection. A safe cycle route here should take priority over private coach parking.
