Public realm improvements in Connaught Village Green
Westminster City Council is consulting on improving public spaces and pedestrian accessibility in Connaught Village. Whilst we welcome the proposed public realm improvements, we regret the lost opportunities to reduce traffic in the area. Read more about the proposals here.
Our view on the proposals
We welcome the aspiration to improve the public realm of Connaught Village and to improve the cycling route between Titchborne Row and Albion Street. However, we object to the proposals for the following reasons:
The proposals appear to do nothing to reduce motor traffic, which is the biggest barrier to cycling in the area.
It will no longer be possible to cycle from Connaught Street down Kendal Street (and on to the proposed cycle improvements on George Street), thus reducing cycle permeability.
More generally, we feel that the proposals offer poor value for money. The new public space is to be welcomed; but, with a lot of motor traffic still predicted to pass the location, it will be not be a very desirable place to sit and generally spend time.
