Blomfield Road 2-way cycling

Westminster City Council are asking people to comment on the proposal to allow cycling two-way on Blomfield Road in Little Venice, by introducing a ‘contraflow’ cycle lane. Although this is only a short stretch of road, it will make cycling east into Central London much more direct, particularly as there are approved plans to introduce an eastbound contraflow on nearby Delamere Terrace.

Our thoughts

We greatly welcome these proposals. However, we have a few suggestions for improvement. If you agree, you could make these points in your own words in the council’s questionnaire:

  • The proposed cycle lane is in the ‘door zone’ of vehicles parked along the north side of Blomfield Road, which is dangerous. Parking could be ‘floated’ (moved away from the kerb) to create a protected cycle lane, which would be much safer for cycling and improve the experience of pedestrians. (Example from Haringey below)

  • The right turn pocket for cyclists on Westbourne Terrace Bridge Rd should have some physical protection to prevent drivers - travelling south - from cutting the bend and hitting anyone waiting in the right turn pocket. (Example below)

  • The dedicated cycle phase to cross the Warwick Avenue junction from the Blomfield Road contraflow should be made two-way so that cyclists waiting at the opposite side of Blomfield Road can cross at the same time

While allowing two-way cycling on Blomfield Road is a no-brainer for easy, direct cycling, there has been opposition to it for many years from a handful of local residents. So please show the council your support for these proposals!
