Dear Westminster,

Thank you for consulting Westminster Cycling Campaign about this scheme. We are the local group of the London Cycling Campaign.

We are pleased to see that a link is proposed between the two cycleways C3 and C8. For too many years, this has been a serious gap in Westminster’s cycle network, albeit less than 600 metres long.

We particularly support:

  • The introduction of a stepped cycle track in the northbound direction. Given the level of traffic along this road, it is important to give cyclists some protection. The stepped track should also discourage motorists from stopping along this section of road.

  • The proposed modification of the junctions with side streets. As well as giving pedestrians some priority when crossing these streets, the proposed measures should help to reduce the speed of vehicles entering or exiting from the side streets.

  • The extension of the hours of operation of the southbound bus lane to 24/7. However, we see this as a next-best alternative to a cycle track or a massive reduction of motor traffic. And we would prefer not to share the bus lane with taxis and motorcycles.

We rather regret that the proposals do not include making the current peak-hour restrictions of private motor traffic full-time, permanent and enforceable. The resulting drop in traffic would have made further measures feasible, such as a southbound cycle lane or excluding taxis and motorcycles from the bus lane.

We have posted similar comments in your on-line questionnaire.

We hope that these proposals provoke a favourable response and look forward to further progress on this important project.

Yours sincerely,

Colin Wing,

Westminster Cycling Campaign.
